Omega-3s get recommended for almost everything — heart health, brain health, joints, mood. That breadth of claims is exactly why it's worth slowing down and looking at what's actually well-supported.

The clearest evidence

Omega-3 fatty acids (particularly EPA and DHA, found in oily fish) have the strongest evidence around cardiovascular health — specifically triglyceride levels. This is the area where the research is most consistent.

Where it gets murkier

Claims around omega-3 and mood, joint pain, or general "brain health" are more mixed. Some studies show benefit, others show very little. It's not that these effects are fake — it's that they're less consistently proven than the heart-health angle.

Who's most likely to be low

If you rarely eat oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines) — say, less than once or twice a week — you're more likely to be getting less omega-3 than a diet naturally rich in it would provide. That's a reasonable, specific reason to consider supplementing, rather than a vague "everyone needs this."

The realistic takeaway

Omega-3 is one of the better-evidenced supplements out there, particularly for people who don't eat much fish. It's not a cure-all, and framing it as one undersells the parts of the evidence that are actually strong.
